Weather in Britain- we can only dream....
The Meteorological Office issued an advance weather warning with temperatures expected to reach no more than three degrees Celsius, and predicted to fall to minus five in most areas and as low as minus ten in rural areas overnight.
A Met Office spokesman said icy blasts from gale force winds down the east coast would make it feel as cold as minus fifteen.
"The snowfall will be heavy in places, about 10 to 15cm of level snow"

Just got back from a free preview of Pride and Prejudice which is opening this week at a theatre down my block. My housemates wouldn't come (they hadn't ever heard of Jane Austen) as 'Ordinary Joe' was showing in realitv land. It was a good play but a poor adaptation of the book, in my opinion. I guess knowing the book word for word is not too helpful in one's appreciation of any newer version. Grammaticus just knows in her heart that Jane would never leave those prepositions dangling!
In other news, I'm on a media-reading kick and am part way into 'Culture Jam' by Kalle Lasn. It's an interesting book that seems to explain a lot about media influence on our everyday lives. He invites readers to tally up their 'real' life vs their 'virtual' life. ie- if you laugh at a joke someone tells instead of a sitcom, give a check in the 'real' column, if you watch porn instead of having real sex (or have cyber-sex) put a check in the 'virtual' column. Might be an eye-opening experiment!

Man oh man! They keep lying to us! Yesterday the weather forecast told me that Monday would be a low of -15C. Today, the tune has changed to a low of -30C. Oops, hee hee. Grrr.
Tonight is nightmare on Notre Dame St at my house. There are five hours of Golden Globes on TV and my housemates plan to watch every second....yoi.

So I'm like, 'hmmm, maybe I should work a little more on getting fit' and I head to a fitness magazine website for tips. EVERY SINGLE ONE was about cardio 'machines'. Yeesh. Does anyone go outside??? Maybe I should just head to Hawaii with Charlotte and become a kayaking beach bum.

em's state of the union address
ack. the people I live with don't seem to care about anything in the world! They have intensely stressful jobs, true, but honestly know more about Nick and Jessica than any world issue you could name (unless Ralph Lauren perfume is a world issue!)
Eg. I read the following statement by George W Bush:
"Twenty-eight months have passed since Sept. 11, 2001, over two years without an attack on American soil, and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting and false."
and I say, "Bush is psychotic!"
My darling housemate, says "uhhh...ok?" like I'm crazy. I have a sneaking suspicion she didn't actually know who I was talking about. Is there a real world outside my reality tv world?

The Shit Hitteth the Fanneth
My life has been on the high-stress side over the last week. Everyone in my house (3 of us) came back to Montreal after Christmas feeling like we want to go back to school next year. Thing is school=cash, volunteering=no cash. So we talked it over for a few million hours and decided to call it quits in April instead of August as originally planned. You wouldn't think this would be a problem, after all we are volunteers.
However, because of some major funding cuts, MVS no longer officially exists...which means the Montreal unit has no way of getting new people to replace us....this is the problem.
So we had a big meeting with the local committee to explain to them our situations (Jo and Julia wanting to go back to W'peg for the summer, me wanting to stay and work + volunteer at the same time). This did not go over well. Words were said, like mmm...disappointed, hurt, angry, 'losing face', hypocrites, quitters...the list goes on. By the time the (church!) committee chair was done having her say we were all in tears. This is not normal for me. Much stress and upset has ensued.
Right now I just hope to get private sponsors (aka church people and relatives) to allow me to continue my work here for at least part of the summer. We shall see.

You are 24% geek | |
OK, so maybe you ain't a geek. You do, at least, show a bit of interest in the world around you. Either that, or you have enough of a sense of humor to pick some of the sillier answers on the test. Regardless, you're probably a pretty nifty, well-rounded person who gets along fine with people and can chat with just about anyone without fear of looking stupid or foolish or overly concerned with minutiae. God, I hate you. |

Update: Office thermometer reads 7 C (inside!)
OK. Freezing work death. No heat today, but the outside temp. is about -27 (before windchill) Plus there is a fire alarm constantly going off in the apartment upstairs. Yoi. On a brighter note, had a good visit with Meg, found a new squash buddy when we went out with her friend Anna (and others.) Tested out the DVD player with the discs that don't work properly on my computer. But right now I am freaking cold and just want to go home!!!
